DTF (Direct-to-Film) printers are a type of digital printing technology used primarily for garment printing. Unlike traditional methods like DTG (Direct-to-Garment) or screen printing, DTF printing involves printing a design onto a special PET film, applying an adhesive powder, and then heat-pressing it onto fabric.
How DTF Printing Works:
Design Creation – The image is prepared using graphic design software.
Printing on PET Film – The design is printed onto a transparent PET film using a DTF printer, typically with CMYK and white ink.
Powder Application – A hot melt adhesive powder is applied to the printed design.
Curing the Film – The film is cured using a heat press or curing oven to activate the adhesive.
Heat Transfer – The film is pressed onto the fabric at a high temperature, bonding the design to the material.
Peeling & Finishing – After cooling, the film is peeled off, leaving a high-quality, vibrant design.
Advantages of DTF Printing:
Works on cotton, polyester, blends, leather, and more (unlike DTG, which is limited to cotton).
Produces vibrant and durable prints with excellent stretchability.
No pre-treatment is required, unlike DTG printing.
Can print small details and complex designs without color limitations.
More cost-effective for small-batch or custom orders compared to screen printing.
Disadvantages of DTF Printing:
Requires specialized DTF inks, films, and adhesive powder.
More steps compared to DTG, increasing production time.
Film waste can add up, making eco-friendliness a concern.
Print feel may be slightly heavier than DTG.
